Geocaching is an activity involving accurate navigation in the countryside in order to find hidden objects. It is greatly facilitated by the use of Global Positioning System receivers, which calculate their location by receiving signals from a series of geostationary satellites. The Scout Troop has become very involved with geocaching. The Feltham Masonic Lodge has generously made a donation to our funds, which has enabled us to buy several GPS receivers for use by the Group. The photograph below shows a group of Scouts with one of the receivers and what they have recovered from a location.
New Village Hall at Barnham
We moved into the New Village Hall on May 7th.
With several times the space that we had in the old hall, there is room for greatly improved activities. We have a small room for storage and have recently taken delivery of four metal storage cabinets and four lockable notice boards. There will be one of each for each section – Beavers, Cubs and Scouts – and one of each for general use.
The first evening got off to a great start with exciting activities for Beavers and Cubs, followed by motor racing for the Troop. The photographs show the New hall from outside, the Old Hall on its very last day of existence and Scouts racing their cars.
Champion Guy!
Barnham Sections were busy in late October making Guys for the Barnham Best Guy Competition. A splendid selection of Guys was the result, many of them bearing uncanny resemblances to Leaders in the Group! We are delighted and proud that the Guy submitted by the Scout Troop came second overall and won a valuable cash prize. Here he is. Who does he resemble?
Barnham Scout Helps Design Badge
Our Scout District – Arundel & Littlehampton – celebrates its Centenary in 2013. All young members in the District were invited to design a badge to be worn on uniform throughout 2013. Unable to chose a single badge, the final badge was a combination of elements from the designs of 3 members. One of these was Henry Poulter, a Cub at the time of the entry but now a Scout. Congratulations, Henry! Below is a picture of Henry receiving the first copy of the badge from Mark Hewson.
Cubs Success in Swimming Gala
SUCCESS IN DISTRICT SWIMMING GALA

The Cubs at Barnham team:
Triumph in Dragon Boat Races!
Another Triumph for 1st Barnham. Dragon Boat Racing. June 10th 2012
The Scout Troop, ably assisted by some older Cubs and supported by a large number of parents and leaders, acquitted themselves splendidly in the Chichester Dragon Boat Races on Chichester Canal and Basin. Finishing 1st in the young persons’ section was a wonderful result; they won in the final by, quite literally, about 10% of a Dragon’s head! Second place went to Felpham Sea Scouts, whose crew included several 1st Barnham members too!
Congratulations to all our participants.
We will undoubtedly be there next year. One of our Mums has offered to enter a parents’ team, so watch out for this.

Troop Triumphs in Incident Hike
1st Barnham Scout Troop Triumphs in District Incident Hike.
Arundel and Littlehampton Scout District organised an Incident Hike for Scouts during the 2nd weekend in May 2012. Teams had to complete a navigation hike and complete various tasks during the hike. Ours wae the only Troop to enter more than one team – we had 3 entries. All 3 teams finished well up in the league table, with one of our teams taking FIRST PLACE! This is a great achievement and deserved congratulations from everyone in the Group. Well done!
